ROBERT. MOTHERS DAY CHARING CROSS ROAD.
As dusk begins to settle and blend with the lights of closing shop windows and streetlamps over a deserted Charing Cross Road, Robert sweeps the doorstep of the small card shop, clearing away remnants of a quiet Mother’s Day. The usual bustle of central London has thinned to an eerie hush these last few days, a ghost of its former self. It is March 22, 2020, and the growing pandemic is no longer a distant threat but now an undeniable presence in the UK. The world, and this city, are shifting by the hour.
Across the nation, families have marked Mother’s Day in uncertain circumstances some gathering in defiance of the warnings, others keeping their distance, unsure when they might embrace again. In London, the air is thick with anxiety with suspicion of the very air we breathe not being already infected by the virus.
Public Health England’s figures tell the story of an escalating crisis: 1,588 positive cases on Friday, surging to 1,965 on Saturday, with 2,189 confirmed infections by the end of Mothering Sunday in the capital alone. The streets feel different now, every passer by a potential threat, every surface a risk.
And now, the government acts. Monday, March 23, 2020: Prime Minister Boris Johnson announces a nationwide lockdown. From 8 PM tonight, all but essential shops will close. The directive is clear; STAY HOME, PROTECT THE NHS, SAVE LIVES. For the first time, the full weight of the pandemic is pressing against the city’s chest. By nightfall, London’s count rises again—2,433 confirmed cases.
The UK’s total death toll stands at 99.
For those already lost, for those who will fight, and for those too weak to stand against the wave now upon us. God bless us all.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE END OF EMPIRE.
At 17:43 on March 25th, 2020 Trafalgar Square stands empty beneath a wide, clear blue sky. The low March sun stretches long shadows across the stone, bathing Nelson’s Column and the silent fountains in golden light. It could be a scene from a classical painting, perfect in its composition while haunting in its bare absence.
London, once the beating heart of an empire now held its breath. The encroaching pandemic had emptied its streets, leaving only the ghosts of history to linger. The city had seen wars, protests, and celebrations but never this, a stillness so complete.
No tourists sat on the steps. No pigeons flapped for crumbs. The lions, frozen in bronze, kept their silent vigil over the emptiness.
As the virus spread, with 2,433 new infections in London that day and 906 lives lost across the UK, the capital stood at a threshold. The world had changed.

MARK. LAST MAN SWEEPING.
On the third day of London’s and the Nations Lockdown, Northumberland Avenue stood eerily silent under a crisp spring sunshine. Mark, a street cleaner, methodically swept the pavement south of Trafalgar Square, the bristles of his broom scratching against the stone and maybe even traces of the virus. Though the streets are empty the sense of pride and duty in his work remains, even if there’s no one to notice for now.
A filtering face mask covered most of his face which I notice make his glasses fog slightly with each breath as we talk together. He prefers to keep his distance, nodding politely. Across the avenue, red London buses sat idle, their drivers waiting.
“I just do my job,” Mark muttered, pausing to adjust his mask again. “It’s strange, though, sweeping when there’s no one left to drop litter.”
The city had been transformed overnight. On March 25, 2020, London recorded 2,433 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the UK’s total to 9,529. The national death toll according to the NHS had risen to 906. The virus had emptied streets, closed businesses, and left key workers like Mark among the few still moving through the capital.
In the sunlight of the day, it’s warmer than it has been of late, almost normal but in the shadows the air is cool with a chill, the kind that creeps beyond the weather, settling into the bones of a city bracing now for what is still to come.
Mark nods quietly and says ‘Keep Safe’ from under his face mask adjusting it as he pushes it down tighter onto his face, he nods then turns then slowly and continues on his way looking into a nearby empty bin as he passes just in case there’s anything in there to collect but finds nothing then continues on his way.

A PRAYER ON BEHALF OF ALL.
In stillness the steps of St. Paul’s Cathedral lay deserted. A sign below the steps to the entrance stands alone: "For Public Safety, the Cathedral has Closed. The Cathedral ministers are continuing worship and prayer on behalf of all."
London’s greatest landmark, a symbol of endurance through war and disaster, now stands silent in the face of an invisible enemy. The city locked down, the streets empty, the weight of the pandemic pressing on its ancient stones.
Inside, unseen, prayers continued. Outside, only the wind and the fading sunlight bears witness as I stand alone. A distant siren can be heard as an air conditioning unit from a nearby office turns off leaving a cold silence, a lone Pidgeon flaps its wings as I walk away onto home towards and through the back streets of Clerkenwell.

MOHAMMED & LOUIS. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS STRANDED IN LOCKDOWN.
As the sun sets over Tower Bridge, Mohammed, a drama student with a keen interest in fashion from the United States, and Louis, a sports physiotherapy student from Hong Kong, find themselves marooned in the UK, uncertain of their next move. The two friends had been living in student accommodation when the UK went into strict lockdown.
On March 23, 2020, Prime Minister Boris Johnson had announced an unprecedented nationwide lockdown, ordering people to stay home except for essential travel. Universities shifted to remote learning, and international travel ground to a halt, leaving thousands of students stranded. Flights were cancelled, borders tightened and closed down as many embassies struggled to repatriate their citizens.
For Mohammed and Louis, the situation is frustrating but unavoidable. “We didn’t expect to be stuck here indefinitely but at the moment it’s no one appears to know where all this is going” said Mohammed reflecting on the uncertainty. Louis, whose family was thousands of miles away, added, “We just
have to wait and see when we can get home.”
With Tower Bridge eerily quiet the pair, like many other international students, face an uncertain future waiting for restrictions to ease and their chance to return home.

COULD THIS BE THE END OF EMPIRE.
As dusk settles over Tower Bridge a lone figure stands motionless, silhouetted against the fading light. The city, once teeming with life is now eerily quiet, a stark reminder of Britain’s battle against the virus as it continues to take hold.
Earlier that evening, Health Secretary Matt Hancock addressed the nation in the daily government briefing, urging people to remain indoors despite the unseasonably warm weather. “Together, we are slowing the spread of the virus,” he said from behind the podium at Downing Street just a mile or so away, acknowledging the collective effort.
He then paid tribute to Captain Tom Moore, the 99-year-old World War II veteran who had captured the nation’s heart by walking 100 laps of his garden to raise funds for NHS charities. Moore’s campaign had exceeded £7 million, becoming a symbol of a nations resilience in the dark times. “He is an inspiration to us all,” Hancock declared.
Yet, behind the hopeful words, the numbers painted a grim picture. 313,769 tests had been conducted, with 98,476 confirmed cases. The hospitalized count stood at 19,529, and 12,868 lives had been lost, an increase of 761 in just the last 24 hours.
The lone figure on Tower Bridge reflects a nation as it mourns, trapped in uncertainty, waiting for an end that for now seems impossibly distant.

ALONE IN LONDON.
On a bleak Friday afternoon, I step onto an eerily empty Millennium Bridge, its usual energy replaced by an unsettling stillness, the once-bustling, steely crossing across the Thames now silent under the grip of the pandemic. As I move, the wind blows with a slight drizzle as the bells of St. Paul’s Cathedral ahead of me chime a hauntingly 16.45, their echoes drifting along the banks of the Thames and through the empty streets, carried on the wind, a solemn soundtrack to a city silenced.
Below, the River Thames flowed undisturbed, save for a solitary police boat cutting through the water, passing beneath the bridge, now one of the few remaining signs of human presence in a metropolis now in stillness. London, a city of over nine million people had now become unrecognisable.
Just weeks since the UK government had imposed strict lockdown measures, shutting down businesses, limiting movement and ordering people to stay indoors the usually vibrant South Bank once filled with street performers and tourists now lay abandoned deserted of the hum of life now replaced by an unnatural and unnerving hush.
In this moment, standing alone above the river, it’s impossible to ignore the weight of history unfolding. London has seen war and hardship before, but never has it felt so utterly still.

WILLIAM.
Carnaby Street, usually pulsing with shoppers and tourists lies eerily silent. The Covid-19 pandemic has rendered it another ghost street in this increasingly ghost town, a once bustling thoroughfare now transformed into an unexpected, serendipitous playground. Amid the deserted shopfronts and shuttered cafes, William, a World Radio Control Car Champion seizes a rare opportunity.
He sets his latest RC car onto the empty paving, its small wheels spinning with precision. The absence of pedestrians and traffic turns this iconic London street into an uncommon race track, a space where he can test his skill with the new car in a way he can only have ever dreamt of. The remote hum of his car echoes through the void, the only movement in a space where stillness reigns.
With the government’s stay-at-home order in full effect, the sight of William and his miniature racer is an anomaly, one man and his machine, finding motion in a city temporarily frozen. The pandemic has altered daily life beyond recognition, but for a brief moment, Carnaby Street hosts a different kind of race and adaptation amid global uncertainty.

DIANA.
Diana an 81-year-old therapy dog carer, takes a quiet yet secretly significant afternoon outing on Friday evening near the Imperial War Museum. Accompanied by her St. Thomas’s therapy dog Willow, she was on her way to a socially distanced albeit not quite within the rules VE Day gathering, an opportunity for a rare moment of human connection and contact.
Having lived alone since the passing of her husband, Diana had been unable to work for the last eight weeks due to the government’s stay-at-home directive. With therapy dogs and their carers side-lined for the foreseeable future, the isolation had taken an additional toll on her well-being. Her outing that evening, though discreet, was to provide a much-needed break from solitude of the pandemic.

A POIGNANT ENCOUNTER FOUR YEARS LATER.
London, September 29, 2024 – Walking near the spot where Diana was photographed four years earlier, a chance encounter revealed an unexpected continuity. At first, the woman appeared to be Diana, but upon introduction, it became clear she was someone else yet the dog by her side was unmistakably and confirmed by it’s new owner the very same dog the same.
It was then that the news came: Diana had passed away the year before after a short illness. However, her legacy endures. The same therapy dog ‘Willow’ she once cared for continues its work, bringing comfort to patients at St. Thomas’s Hospital, a lasting testament to the kindness and dedication Diana embodied. -

ALEXANDRA. FOREIGN NHS MENTAL HEALTH NURSE & TECHNO FAN.
In Alexandra's own words;
"I’m here to thank all the NHS workers and key workers for risking their lives during these times, I’m here to apologise in the name of the government for all the families suffering a loss in these trying times, I’m here to thank everyone that claps for us essential workers genuinely and I am here to tell that group of people across the river from us to stop their hypocritical clapping."
"The foreign nurses from this exact hospital we are near have saved Boris Johnson’s life and yet he wants them to pay £600 plus for themselves and each family member here with them for working in the NHS on top of their taxes saying he can’t think of another way to fund the service. I’ve worked in the NHS in the mental health sector for years, there have never been money for our service in their view, even when there was no pandemic! That is his thanks to all of us that risk our lives for others and have no other choice. He doesn’t have money for the NHS, but they had £500 Billion to bail the banks out 10 years ago, they had enough money to give themselves the Members Of Parliament a £10 Thousand salary rise each for working from home. Whereas the essential workers get claps and surcharges, pay caps, and get dismissed from the bereavement scheme. We’re good enough to save you but not good enough to deserve safe working conditions or pay. Shame on the government, shame.!"
"Thank you to all key workers, you deserve better, we deserve better.!"

'It's about time'. A thought echoed by the many before and now all the more after the shocking murder of George Floyd was filmed by 17-year-old Darnella Frazier while taking her nine-year-old cousin to a local food store in Minneapolis Minnesota. For 10 minutes and nine seconds she filmed until the officers and Mr. Floyd left the scene; the former on foot, the latter on a stretcher. Ms Frazier could never have imagined at that point the chain of events that her video would set in motion. With bravery and at the click of a button on her mobile phone the teen had spurred wave after wave of 'Black Lives Matter' protests not only in the us but across the world.

CROWN & ANCHOR 1904 NOW WITHOUT HOPE.
On a still grey summers evening the Crown & Anchor on the corner of Neal Street and Shelton Street in Covent Garden stands in silence and darkness, its doors continuing to be locked under government restrictions where in pre-pandemic times the crowd drinking outside would be 10 plus deep on the paved pedestrianised area in front. Once a hub of evening life, Covent Garden continues to remain eerily quiet, its usually packed streets all but empty. Like thousands of pubs across the UK, it remains closed until 4 July, when hospitality venues will be allowed to reopen with strict social distancing rules.
The city is still grapples with the effects of COVID-19. Government data today reports 25,700 active cases, 3,700 hospitalizations, and 155 new deaths (although after the pandemic adjusted down to 128 deaths) in the last 24 hours, highlighting the continued risk. When pubs reopen, customers will face mandatory table service, limited capacity, and hygiene protocols with standing at the bar prohibited.
As businesses await reopening, uncertainty lingers. With infection rates still continuing even with social distancing measures, many fear another lockdown if the forthcoming restrictions prove ineffective.

During this period, Laurence returned to his childhood home near St. Ives to care for his elderly parents. Adhering to public health guidelines, he practiced strict isolation, minimizing contact with others to prevent potential virus transmission.
To manage the stresses of caregiving and isolation, Laurence took daily walks to the nearly deserted Porthmeor Beach. There, he constructed intricate stone sculptures, reminiscent of the ephemeral works of Andy Goldsworthy and echoing the forms of local artist Barbara Hepworth. His creations stood as a testament to human resilience and creativity during a time of global crisis.
The serene coastal setting of St. Ives, combined with Laurence's artistic endeavors, offered a poignant contrast to the broader national struggle against the pandemic. His solitary sculptures on the quiet beach symbolized both personal and collective perseverance in the face of unprecedented challenges. STEVEN. THE RETIRED BANK MANAGER WHO HONOURS HIS LATE SON’S MEMORY THROUGH COLLECTIBLE SHOP.
Steven, a former bank manager at Barclays’ Cambourne branch, retired and took over his late son's shop in St. Ives Cornwall, preserving his memory through their shared passion. The shop, The Dragon’s Hoard, located on Tre Pol Pen Street, is filled with vintage toys and collectibles, a labour of love for Steven who says not a day passes without remembering his son and his early passing.
A reserved and humble man, Steven becomes animated when discussing the treasures in his shop. Among them, a Corgi Starsky & Hutch Ford Gran Torino from the 70’s sits amidst a collection of well-loved toy cars, vans, and lorries. Priced at five pounds, the model now rests on a shelf at home, a nostalgic reminder of childhood Saturday nights long before the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the global crisis of 2020, as many returned to Cornwall for staycations and to reunite with family, The Dragon’s Hoard stood as both a haven for collectors, dads and their sons and a tribute to a father's enduring love.

2020 07 28 / 19.59 / STEVE. THE UNSEEN BACKBONE OF SMITHFIELD MARKET.
The scent of raw meat lingers on the warm evening air as Steve unloads another shipment of pig carcasses, his hands moving with the ease of long practice as he takes them down. Throughout the great global pandemic of 2020/21, he has worked tirelessly, ensuring London’s butchers remain stocked and its people fed. A key worker in an unforgiving trade, his efforts go largely unnoticed yet without him the city would struggle.
Smithfield Market has stood for over 800 years since the site was first described in 1174 by William Fitzstephen clerk to Thomas Becket as “a smooth field where every Friday there is a celebrated rendezvous of fine horses to be sold, and in another quarter are placed vendible’s of the peasant, swine with their deep flanks, and cows and oxen of immense bulk, surviving wars, recessions, and the intense Blitz of September 1940 to May 1941 when Nazi bombs tore through its Victorian structure. Now, in a different kind of battle, Steve and his fellow workers embody that same resilience.
Steve unlocks the back of the latest lorry to arrive as he rolls his shoulders and readies himself. The pandemic may be fading, but his work is never done. London moves forward on the backs of the unseen and tonight, like every night Steve works tirelessly carrying the load.

As a child plays airports with his City Lego set on a rainy day in deepest Somerset while miles away in an office somewhere in Switzerland decisions are being made behind the scenes and a few days later on the 22nd of August STA Travel has become the latest travel firm to fall victim to the Covid-19 pandemic. The company, which grew out of a student travel business and specialised in trips for young people, including gap years and volunteer projects, has today ceased trading immediately closing more than 50 shops across the UK.
The firm announced through a statement on its website that customers with bookings would "Receive further communication in the coming days and sorry to everybody for the inconvenience and the limited information available at this time," About 500 UK jobs are now thought to be at risk as a result of the firm's failure. The firm's parent company Diethelm Keller Holding Ltd based in Switzerland, said the pandemic had "Brought the travel industry to a standstill". Meanwhile in Bath, Luca's gone for his dinner.

He thanks the Lord above that as the restrictions lifted Construction Workers were able to return to work in higher numbers and at a faster rate than the Cab Drivers with their fallen demand reported in the news today the 26th August from the London Licensed Taxi Drivers Association that their Taxi fleet has declined by over 2,000 drivers over the months of the pandemic with reported takings down between 80-90%.
Construction sites will come and eventually go while the traditional clientele of Taxi Drivers now bring their own packed lunches each day and with the cafe having to observe the Social Distancing rules and only able to fit four customers at a time the days ahead will be tough but I feel and am sure Billy Boots will be tougher and see these days of the pandemic through. DOLLY. ONE OF MANY CLIMATE PROTESTER DEFYING COVID RULES IN THE LONDON EXTINCTION REBELLION DEMONSTRATIONS.
Protestor Dolly travels from Scarborough to central London on Thursday, openly defying the current COVID-19 restrictions like many others to join climate demonstrations organized by Extinction Rebellion. Taking a moment to reorganise and take a moments rest sitting beneath the equestrian statue of Charles I at the top of Whitehall near Trafalgar Square, Dolly brandished a wad of Extinction Rebellion’s "Bank of Climate Catastrophe" 10-year notes as I talked with her, a symbolic currency highlighting the cost of government inaction on climate change.
Dolly was among hundreds of activists demanding a transition to a plant-based food system to mitigate climate change and reduce the risk of future pandemics. The demonstration was part of a broader 10-day protest campaign by Extinction Rebellion, which has seen mass arrests and large-scale disruption right across London.
By the third day of protests, more than 300 people had been arrested, with Scotland Yard confirming over 200 arrests linked to a blockade on Lambeth Bridge near the Houses of Parliament. Police said some activists had “locked on” by attaching themselves to the bridge, preventing traffic from passing. Elsewhere, Animal Rebellion demonstrators glued themselves to a pink-painted slaughterhouse truck, blocking Victoria Street, while others staged sit-ins and glued themselves to the ground around Parliament.
The demonstrations have taken place despite strict COVID-19 restrictions in London and the Southeast. At this time, the UK government has imposed a "rule of six" on gatherings, with strict social distancing measures and mandatory mask-wearing in public spaces. Travel is discouraged except for essential purposes, and large protests are deemed unlawful under pandemic regulations. However, many activists defied these rules, gathering in close proximity and traveling from various parts of the country to join the protests.
More protests were planned for Friday, with police imposing restrictions on an upcoming demonstration in Parliament Square.

JILL . EXTINCTION REBELLION PROTESTOR TAKEN AWAY AS CLIMATE DEMONSTRATIONS DEFY COVID RULES.
Jill a pacifist and Extinction Rebellion activist, described as a pacifist protester is taken away in the back of a police van on Thursday afternoon as authorities cracked down on climate demonstrations in central London. She was among 300 activists demanding a transition to a plant-based food system, arguing that such a shift could help mitigate climate change and reduce the risk of future pandemics.
The demonstration was part of Extinction Rebellion’s 10-day campaign of civil disobedience, which has led to mass arrests and significant disruptions across the city. Despite strict COVID-19 restrictions, large groups gathered, defying the UK government’s pandemic measures. At this time, the "rule of six" limits gatherings and travel is discouraged except for essential reasons. Large protests are deemed unlawful, yet activists have travelled from across the country to take part.
As Jill and others were detained, police closely monitored the situation. Scotland Yard had already made over 300 arrests, including more than 200 at Lambeth Bridge, where protesters locked themselves to the structure. More demonstrations were planned, despite police orders restricting further gatherings.

Later South African Soprano Golda Schultz said after that she had sang them as a tribute to the Windrush Generation, migrants and those that have come to Britain.

As dusk settles over Kew, flights continue to land at UK airports carrying tourists and, with them the unseen threat of new emerging COVID-19 strains. Despite rising case numbers, the government continues to allow international arrivals hoping I feel in vain to salvage the stagnating economy. Scientists warned of imported infections, but restrictions remained patchy.
At Heathrow, weary passengers disembark, some remaining masked from the flight, others indifferent. In Kew’s quiet streets, residents isolate and brace for what is still to come. Today, she rides not for herself, but for the gentlemen who have been dealt a tough hand in life.
‘The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride’ is more than just a parade of style, it is a lifeline. Across the world, riders like Swana take to the streets, raising funds for Movember the leading men’s health organisation. Their mission, to fuel ground-breaking research into prostate cancer and support mental health and suicide prevention programs. Too many men suffer in silence, especially in these times of the pandemic their struggles unseen, Swana rides to make sure they are heard.
Through winding city streets of London, she rides with purpose, a symbol of solidarity and hope. Every mile clocked, every donation made, fuels a movement that seeks to save lives. As engines hum in unison even though everybody with the Covid restrictions must ride apart, the message is clear: men’s health matters, and no one should fight alone.
For Swana and countless others, the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is not just about motorcycles—it’s about making a difference, one ride at a time.

TIANNA TAKES THE KNEE BEFORE PARLIAMENT AT THE BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTEST AMID THE PANDEMIC.
As rain threatened in the grey skies overhead, Tianna knelt silently on the A3212 road of Parliament Square, her back to a line of police officers assembled in front of the gates to Parliament itself. Around her, thousands of demonstrators chanted, their voices carrying across Westminster. The Black Lives Matter march, sparked by the brutal killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer had reached the heart of London, demanding an end to systemic racism and police brutality.
The demonstration was one of many that erupted worldwide in the wake of Floyd’s death and countless others before him. Protesters, despite the risks of the Covid-19 pandemic gathered to make their voices heard, holding signs reading “No Justice, No Peace”, “Silence is Violence” and “Black Lives Matter”. The march unfolded as the UK remained under lockdown, balancing public health concerns with a growing civil rights movement.
Meanwhile, the latest government figures painted a stark picture of the pandemic’s toll. A total of 4,786,219 coronavirus tests had been conducted, revealing 279,856 positive cases, an increase of 1,871 from the previous day. Hospital admissions for Covid-19 stood at 7,485, down 16% from the previous week, but the death toll continued to rise with 39,728 people now having died, 359 more than the day before.
Against this backdrop, today the government launched NHS Test and Trace, a system aimed at identifying, containing, and controlling the virus in the UK. As the nation grappled with twin crises a public health emergency and a reckoning with racial injustice Tianna’s silent act of protest becomes a powerful symbol of resistance in an uncertain time.

With the virus having flattened and life feeling to be slowly returning to some sense of normality Covid 19 cases begin to surge after 12,872 people test positive for the virus as of 9AM this morning.
901,905 tests for coronavirus have now been carried out of which 171,253 have tested positive an increase of 6,032 since the day before.
Across all settings the government added that a further 49 people had died within (within the new 28 days of testing positive rule) bringing the total number of UK deaths to a total of 42,317.
The latest figure of 12,872 new cases which puts the UK's total number of cases at 480,017 is the highest daily rise since the pandemic began although while saying this experts have warned it could be misleading as it is unclear how many people had been infected during the height of the first wave due to the lack of community testing at the time. -

KIERAN AND THE TALE OF THE BRISTOL HOUSEMATES MISTAKEN FOR RULE BREAKERS.
Kieren tells me of how on a sunny April afternoon during the early days of the pandemic, he and his Bristol housemates found themselves at the centre of an unexpected police raid courtesy of an overzealous interpretation of lockdown laws. Enjoying the rare British sunshine in their shared garden, the group were suddenly confronted by officers convinced they were a band of illicit minglers from different households breaking the rules.
With the stern efficiency of a crime drama, the police demanded identification, certain they'd caught these rule-breakers in the act. However, after some back-and-forth and the production of ID’s all bearing the same address, the officers realized their mistake. Awkward silence ensued before the police offered a sheepish apology and, with a touch of British politeness, wished them a pleasant party. Their parting words a firm reminder just in case they did have any ideas of inviting their friends over: “No mixing with other households now!”
“Cheers officers” the lads replied in unison raising their drinks as the police exited. And so, the housemates resumed their sun-soaked afternoon.

From early morning he peddles through to the afternoon the evening rush hour and into the night to make ends meet as the Covid 19 Pandemic continues and the 2nd Wave gathers. You may recognise Metin if you've ever shopped in Omega, Cartier or any of the other swanky shops of Bond Street but when the pandemic struck and being only on the standard 'Zero' hours contract that these shops seem to employ he was soon made redundant without the option of furlough quickly losing his rented apartment and forced to stay with friends sleeping on floors until he was able to find work on a shared ride on a West End Rick Shaw in early September. Now working every day to cover his £18 a night hostel fee, enough for food and have a little left over to set aside and save he says of how this will soon pass "I was in the Turkish Army for two and a half years I've had worse; this is life." JOSH.
On the evening of Wednesday, 4 November 2020, as the clock approached 4:24 PM, the atmosphere on a BBC film set in Islington’s Camden Passage was charged with a mix of urgency and apprehension. The United Kingdom was bracing for its second national lockdown set to commence at midnight, a measure announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to curb the escalating COVID-19 cases of recent days.
For the crew, this meant a race against time to complete critical scenes before the stringent restrictions took effect. Among them was lighting technician and producer Josh whose role was pivotal in ensuring the visual quality of the production as the light began to fall. Adhering to the BBC's comprehensive COVID-19 production guidelines, the team implemented rigorous safety protocols, including social distancing, mandatory face coverings, and regular sanitation of equipment.
The impending lockdown, effective in just over 7 and a half hours at midnight from 5 November, mandated the population to stay at home once again, permitting outings solely for essential purposes such as work (where remote work was not feasible), education, exercise, medical needs, and shopping for necessities.
As the final scenes were captured, the lighting technician and fellow crew members faced the reality of an industry once again on pause. The lockdown posed significant challenges to film and television production, with many projects halted, postponed, and even cancelled. The BBC as with other broadcasters, had to navigate these obstacles, balancing the safety of its staff with the demands of content creation.
Reflecting on that day, the Josh remarked, "We were determined to get the job done, knowing this might be our last shoot for a while. The uncertainty was daunting, but the commitment by the team to what we do has kept us going."
This snapshot of dedication underscores the resilience of those in the creative industries, many of whom being freelance don’t get the government handouts of furlough etc as the strive to bring stories to life even as the world around them comes to a halt.

Ted stands on the platform at Crystal Palace station, the cold grey bite of lockdown era London around him. Draped around his shoulders is a St. Pauli scarf, more than just a nod to the cult German club, but a statement. In a year that’s bought isolation and division, the Hamburg team’s anti-fascist, anti-racist ethos feels more relevant than ever.
With over 500 supporters’ clubs worldwide and counting, St. Pauli’s reach grows, even as stadiums remain empty. The second lockdown of the Great Global Pandemic drags on but for Ted, football is more than the game, it’s a movement to keep people together.

With his assessments compete and a place assured to study Business at University Sam decided to miss this year as the option of learning remotely wasn't the most appealing and instead has spent what for many would be a gap year the last 9 months working at his local B&Q store. It's given him the opportunity to earn and save before his sturdies although he does admit he does have a fear at how the superstore management don't limit the numbers at any time in store or supply even the most basic of PPE while also selling the non- essentials reaping profits akin to those levels seen in normal times.

Talking of the lockdown and the effect it's had on the many Rian speaks of the positive fallout it's had on himself. Overweight and working long hours he tells me of how suddenly without anything to do he took to walking as the lockdown tightened its grip. This in turn led to him, cooking more and as the weight began to fall off, he began walking further and exercising more. Just over a year later he's dropped an incredible 13 stone and now weighs in at just a shade over 11 feeling not only physically fitter but mentally also.

THE BATTLE OF HYDE PARK.
I have to say I was there however the mainstream media wanted to paint it, a witness nothing else as the Police came in without warning, one minute standing while talking to the peaceful protestor milling about, engaging in conversation then the next barging in to confiscate a drum an amp a microphone and a keyboard without warning or negotiation and then it happened.

THE BATTLE OF HYDE PARK.
From joyous singing of 'Don't Look Back In Anger' while putting the last year behind those in the circle to a full on battle within ten minutes. Yes, the crowd were breaking Covid rules but after a year locked up and with the infection rate now at 25 in a 100,000 in London many may sympathise with the mainly young crowd for singing with joy. Looking at this small crowd and then witnessing the crowded streets of the Oxford Street shopping district and nightlife areas of Soho with its bargain hunters and revellers ignoring any social distancing one does wonder who was exactly in charge at the Met this day. No negotiator, nobody representing the Police coming over to ask the crowd to disperse just a group of officers pushing and barging their way into the circle attempting to grab and confiscate any instruments they could find igniting the few to revolt while tarnishing the many.

EVENING RUSH HOUR. CITY OF LONDON.
Evening rush hour in the City of London, once a symphony of hurried footsteps, blaring horns and the rhythmic shuffle of weary commuters, now carries an eerie hush. The hour of departure on a Thursday evening should bring with it a flood of business suits and briefcases, a tide of traders, lawyers, bankers, secretaries, and other office workers spilling onto pavements bound for packed Tube carriages, buses and taxis. But on this 6th of May 2021, amid the aftermath of the Great Global Pandemic the city bears a different face: gaunt, spectral, and oddly Dickensian with its deserted streets.
From Kings Arms Yard in Moorgate, the view toward Tower 42—once the NatWest Tower, a symbol of financial might stretches out in an unsettling stillness with its floors and windows in empty darkness. The glass and steel of the skyline reflect a setting sun that bathes the near-empty streets in a ghostly amber glow with cold turquoise shadows. A solitary bus glides past, the silhouette momentarily punctuating the silence, the hum of the hybrid engine echoing through the streets before returning to silent stillness once more as the bus disappears. I walk to the end of the street and observe an empty black cab as it idles at a junction, its driver gazing into the distance as if waiting for a past that for now feels like it may never return.
It is a scene that calls to mind the ‘Night Walks’ of Charles Dickens’ with his wanderings through Victorian London as it slumbered uneasily under its own weight of poverty and decay. The pandemic has made phantoms of city workers while scattering them into remote corners of home offices, reducing these thoroughfares of the City of London to near silent, hollow corridors of lost routine. The grand edifices of finance stand like mausoleums to a pre-pandemic ambition, their lobbies untroubled by the tides of receding commerce.
Shops, pubs, and restaurants that once bustled with the after-work crowd are shuttered, their interiors dark and dormant. The occasional figure emerges into the streets, a lone businessman or woman, a security guard, or office cleaner. The few that brave the streets seem to drift rather than stride, hunched over uncertain of their place in this modern-day ghost-town.
A year and two months since the world changed, and the city still feels like a held breath. There is talk of recovery, of return, of the resumption of normality, yet the fabric of this metropolis remains frayed. Will the tide of life rush back in or will London like Dickens’ wandering spirit forever walk its own empty streets, seeking a past it may never reclaim.
As the sun dips lower, the glow of streetlights flicker to life within the cold blue shadows, illuminating a London both familiar while alien in its silence and emptiness. For now, the city will continue to sleep, waiting for the rush hour that once was but may never be again.

VACCINATION HUB ANGEL
A steady stream of people arrives at the COVID-19 Vaccination Hub inside the Business Design Centre, near Islington Green in Angel. With the UK’s vaccine rollout in full swing, the centre is a key site in the fight against the virus, offering both first and second doses to eligible groups.
The country has administered over 56 million doses, with more than 36 million people having received at least one jab. Today’s COVID figures report 2,412 new cases, 932 hospitalizations and 9 deaths across the U.K. a stark contrast to the height of the pandemic.
People queuing express cautious optimism. “It’s a relief to finally get my shot,” says one local. With restrictions easing, pubs, shops, and gyms have reopened, but officials urge caution amid concerns over new variants. The race between vaccinations and infections continues as London pushes for a safer summer.

Outside, the rain falls in steady sheets, washing the city streets clean with each droplet washing them that little bit cleaner, a quiet erasure of the long, grim months of isolation and the pandemic. London, once gripped by the Great Global Pandemic of 2020-21, is stirring again.
Phillip, a renowned gender-affirming surgeon, steps through the Tate Modern’s doors with his family for the first time in over a year. Art, his silent refuge welcomes him back. The raw power of the Turbine Hall, the hushed reverence of Rothko’s room—each space a reminder of endurance, of transformation.
The rain continues with heavy downpours through the afternoon and slowly and surely life returns as in the presence of great art Phillip like his city, begins to heal.

SIMON.
As the evening light softened over London, Simon walked home along Lower Sloane Street, a bouquet of rich purple autumnal blooms over his shoulder. The air carried a crispness that hinted at the changing season, and the golden hues of the setting sun cast a warm glow over the city. For the first time in two years, he had just stepped out of the Chelsea Flower Show, an event that like so many others had been silenced by the pandemic.
This year’s show had been different. Postponed from its usual May schedule, it was the first autumn edition in the event’s 108-year history. The usual soft pastels of spring had given way to fiery reds, burnt oranges, and deep purples.
Chrysanthemums, salvias, and dahlias had taken centre stage, their rich colours echoing the changing leaves of the nearby trees along Lower Sloane Street.
As Simon walked, he reflected on the past two years, the uncertainty and the isolation of a world turned upside down. The simple act of attending the flower show had felt like a quiet victory, a return to something normal, something joyful. The flowers he carries weren’t just a souvenir; they were a symbol of resilience, of nature’s unyielding cycle.
The streets of Chelsea were quieter than usual, much quieter with the city still recovering from the upheaval of the pandemic. But in that moment, surrounded by the scent of fresh blooms and the rustling leaves in the breeze, Simon felt at peace once again he said as life was returning, slowly but surely, in petals and colours and in small joys rediscovered.
And with that thought, he walked on, the large bouquet over his shoulder a reminder that even after the hardest of times beauty always finds a way to bloom again.

NICCY.
Coming to London to run the marathon had always been a dream for Niccy although one that very nearly became shattered just weeks before.
Double vaccinated and having worked on the NHS frontline throughout the pandemic and after months spent being cautious and many a day clad head to toe in PPE, he'd taken time off to watch the Euros and joined friends he hadn't seen for quite a while for the final screened down at the local pub just twelve weeks before where he believes was where he then contracted Covid 19.
Things had been touch and go for the following weeks he says as he fought the virus, breathless at times fatigued at others while he fought his way back to a level of health to resume his training and prepare for the marathon.
Today he stands having overcome his own personal battle, it may be not be the time he'd wanted but he tells me of how grateful he his, thankful of the vaccines and being able to take to the streets after two years of waiting after 2020's run had been cancelled. 26.2 miles completed and one of 35,300 runners crossing the line in London with thousands more joining in remotely around the globe.

FAREWELL.
On the hottest day ever recorded in the UK Tuesday July 19, 2022, Kahlan and her mother, Chantel, set out for an evening cycle as the blistering 40.3ºC heat finally began to ease. Pedalling along the bridleway of Serpentine Road in Hyde Park, they savoured the golden-hour breeze, a fleeting relief from the suffocating day.
Kahlan, originally from Texas, had been stranded in the UK when the pandemic struck in her tiny flat in London’s Victoria, her studies and missionary work keeping her anchored through lockdowns and uncertainty. Now, with the world reopened, her mother had come to bring her home. This ride, on the first post-Covid summer, was more than just an escape from the heat but a quiet farewell to the city that had unexpectedly shaped her journey and become her accidental home capturing a moment of change, resilience, and the lingering echoes of a world once paused.

FLORENCE
Florence stepped onto the Metropolitan Line at Kings Cross the carriage already filling with England fans bound for Wembley. Dressed in a red England shirt with a German flag painted on one cheek and an English one on the other, she carried the weight of history with her born to English and German parents, she had chosen her allegiance, albeit mostly but the rivalry between the two nations had never been simple. From England’s World Cup triumph in 1966 to Germany’s penalty heartbreak inflicted at Euro ‘96, the fixture carried decades of tension, triumph, and torment. Now, in the summer of 2022 it was the Lionesses’ turn to make history in a final that for Florence, felt as personal as ever.
The Metropolitan Line, the world’s first underground railway, had been ferrying Londoners to major events for over a century, and now, after years of pandemic-induced isolation it was alive with anticipation once more.
The Covid-19 pandemic had emptied these carriages these last two years, silenced Wembley and kept fans apart, but on this warm July afternoon the air was thick with expectation and the energy of a crowd desperate to reclaim the joy of shared experience. As the train rumbled towards the stadium.

Tom and Vivian stood shoulder to shoulder in Trafalgar Square, swept up in the euphoria of a nation finally celebrating football coming home. The sun gleamed off the fountains as a sea of red and white stretched before and amongst them 7,000 strong, chanting, singing, and waving flags in joyous disbelief. At the front on the stage, the England Women’s team basked in their triumph, lifting the European Championship trophy high, the moment so many had waited 56 years for. The echoes of “Sweet Caroline” rang through the square, mixing with the scent of the warm summer air, the first true and complete summer of freedom after the long shadow of the pandemic.
“They think it’s all over,” Tom grinned, nudging Vivian, his voice barely audible over the roar of the crowd. “The wait definitely is now.” Vivian laughed, her eyes locked through her doubled up sunglasses with white hearts on the Lionesses beaming and cheering from the stage as they jumped up and down with the trophy held aloft.
It was more than just a win, it was history rewritten, a new chapter for English football and a moment of unity after years of expectation. The weight of lost time, of lockdowns and empty stadiums soon faded into the past. Today, in the heart of London, there was only celebration, pride, and the undeniable feeling that at last, England’s Lionesses had brought it home

FELICITY.
In the paling light of the late August evening, the streets of Notting Hill continued to pulse with life as this first summer after began to draw to an end after the long-awaited return of carnival of freedom and of togetherness.
Laughter and music spilled into the air as the Notting Hill Carnival roared back from its pandemic-induced silence. Among the revellers, a woman danced, her face masked yet alight with joy, Felicity. A moment captured, a feeling shared. The past three years had been marked by distance and loss, but today, the streets and the people belonged to celebration. More than just a return to tradition but a testament to resilience, a city a neighbourhood and a community reclaiming its spirit and the sheer uncontainable joy of people being together once again.

CARNIVAL IS BACK.
After a three-year absence due to the pandemic, the Notting Hill Carnival returns in a triumphant explosion of color, music, and culture. Founded in 1966 the world’s second-largest street carnival drew over a million attendees, with 50,000 performers and more than 30 sound systems reigniting the festival’s legendary energy after the covid hiatus.
Day two saw Westbourne Grove near Chepstow Road and Pembridge Villas transformed into a sea of revellers eager to reclaim the joy lost during the pandemic’s isolation. The long-awaited return marked a powerful moment of resilience, as people danced to the rhythms of soca, reggae, and steel drums, celebrating not just the festival but the spirit of the community and survival.
For many, the carnival was more than a party, it was a symbol of life moving forward, a chance to reconnect and embrace the traditions that had been put on hold for far too long.
